Gavin
Mackenzie besuchte die Grammar School in Bournemouth (England) und
studierte anschließend Soziologie an der University of Leicester
(England), wo er 1964 graduierte. Danach ging Mackenzie in die USA und
studierte an der Brown University in Providence (Rhode Island), wo er
zum Master der Philosophie (M.A.) sponsiert und 1970 zum Doktor der
Philosophie (Ph.D.) promoviert wurde. Bereits 1968 war er nach England
zurückgekehrt, wo er 1968 bis 1970 Lecturer für Soziologie an der
University of Leicester war. 1970 nahm er einen Posten an der University
of Cambridge (England) an, wo Mackenzier zunächst Assistant Lecturer und
seit 1973 Full Lecturer an der Cambridge Faculty of Economics and
Politics wurde. Hier lernte er auch den damaligen Lecturer
Anthony Giddens (seit 2004: Baron Giddens
of Southgate in the
London Borough of Enfield;
geb. 1938) kennen, mit dem er mehrfach zusammenarbeitete.
Mackenzie wurde 1970
Fellow des Jesus College der University of Cambridge, wo er 1971 bis
1980 Director of Studies in Social and Political Sciences war, 1972
Tutor und 1982 Senior Tutor wurde.
1992
wechselte Mackenzie den Beruf und wurde Senior Member der Personal- und
Unternehmensberatung Saxton Bampfylde Hever, eine der führenden
Executive Search Companies Großbritanniens.
