June 30. (Monday.)

I saw Böhler in Z. & we had dinner; then we went to a lecture by Gerloff (Franfurt) “Das richtige Geld”. B. was nice, decidedly 2nd rate, vaguely informed, but interested in many thinks. His office is mostly market “research”of a primitive kind. Little can be expected from him. Hates Saitzew & Salin & others. Those divisions in Europe! G’s lecture (& appearance) were pathetic. Most elementary with the ending that the problem of money is a problem – of the heart! This comes from Germany. And he says there is a total desert in econ: there. That must be something. He knew nothing about my lecture at F., also interesting. Vossler seems to be OK; but he had no details. We went later to the Bahnhofsrest. with Böhler, Alb. Hahn, v. Solmssen & sowie students (of the Univ.) Nothing particular emerged, save Hahn’s opinion that everything of scientific importance is over.

Saturd. June 21 I went to Bern to see Amonu. Missed him at the station, dinner at his home & then Dr. Biri (Kyklos). A very nice afternoon. A. little changed. Has written a good deal. He (& Wagner) is the most important economist in Sw. Dr. B. makes a good impression; but they are a long way from center of econ. studies. Kyklos may help them. Salin & Röpke are making trouble. The orientation is toward the West; there seems to be little original work in the whole country. The state is swallowing too many (Wagner, & for minor types of problems). In short, the gen. situation in Switzerland has not changed. With their wealth they should be able to do more esp: to draw talent from other countries that are in a bad state. At least for temporary assignments at an Institute, without which not much can be accomplished.

Sunday I spent with Weyls & their friend …..

We had Breakfast & Dinner together. A very nice man. Long talks about Computers (he is theor. physicist), theory of games etc.
