'-!Friday July 4th. Impossible to catch up. Still very hot & I fool have no Palm Beach Suit here! Today at home; at 6 p.m. a festivity at Erhard´s, then to Dr. Klausberger, if still in time. Dr. John was little changed but shy & as if of a bad conscience. Had a short talk only. He did not show up at Thalmann`s. He is much under the influence of Kamitz who was Pg & is still in the Ch. of Com. (in the background). Nemschak seems a level headed fellow. The work of the (luxuriously fitted) Institute seems to be more on the daily reporting, gov. exposés etc. No signs of pure scientific research. I saw Hainzer, Fojtlin & Parzer. All have had bombs, losses etc but look well. H´s library is small but good (former Bank. verb. lib.); She has a finer Room than mine was; uses my furniture. She works too hard. Many students there who know little but are eager. I have not seen anybody yet of the younger group more intimately. Shall arrange this. Univ. badly damaged but far worse intellectually. Talk with the Rector Adamovich ultraconservative but decent & very sad about univ. conditions. There is a total lack of people about 30-45 who should now be the bulk. I doubt that he is a great man. He is no democrat. As Grassberger told me he was wanted to get disciplinary action started against a student who had written that the Amtsschimmel thrived in the Univ.!! That was “degradation of academic dignity”! As if that could be done except by violation of the standard of truth. What a mind! And this is a prof. of constitutional law. – -' Had a long talk with Rizzi now Pres. of the Nat. Bank (Rockhg 4). He wants further talks about currency reform & gave me a memo. They want to reduce the quantity of notes & deposits very sharply & seem to think that 1:10 is too favorable for the $! (!) Marget thinks similarly, & also Adler. Kienböck has other views but we did not discuss them yet when I saw him. K. was really pleased to see me & we had an animated exchange of ideas & experiences. He regrets that I am not working practically; I would be eminently gifted in that direction he still maintains. He asked me to his house for to-morrow. (He would like a Care package; he looks thin.)

Lunch with Marget. Nice, & little changed but he has learned a great deal of worldliness. He should go into the State Dept. but he talks about pure research etc. I am not quite convinced that he means it. He would like the Institute - . We shall have a further, longer evening talk soon. I also met Dreiman, Loewy, Landenburg & many new ones. Also Cols Sawyer, Rose, Lowlan, from the Princeton Army Staff School. We too shall meet again. Yesterday Lunch with Mrs Dulles. She is with the State Dept. Clever. She does not go with Marget & the $:S relation. She says that the worst here is the total lack of talent among the Austrians, no econ. training, no young men.
