Sunday, July 6th.
I should write many letters. It was again very hot; to-day cooler & light rain.
Yesterday visited Heinl; in his anteroom 3 assistants look at fotos, His dealings: a Bezugsschein for a Chevrolet for Raab. Took app. 1h! (During this hour app. 120 Chev.s were fabricated in the US - at least!). H. said generalities, spoke against Krauland & his currency programs. I asked him for help in the telefone matter.
Then I decided to look up Schams. Met him on the street. He seemed really pleased & we went to the Rebhuhn, where we had 2 good mocca (à 2.25.) & he bought a cigar à 10.- He has a very small income; how do they do this?? He was a Pg but has been cleared & is permitted to teach (Tech.H.) many things such as Public Finance, admin. law etc. At the end of 1948 he may advance or return to the Kanzleramt. I think I can forgive him his Pg; it is different from Kamitz. Mahr is belastet & for a year had to work on clearing rubble. Mayer - Sch. told me applied voluntarily to be sent to a Nazi Schulungslager!! He also asked Sch. for help to become a Pg! (When the Russians had arrived, Grassberger told me, Mayer, instead of going to the Univ. went to offer his services to K. Gruber who was known as leader of the Tyrol. Resistance Movement. Shortly afterwards G. became Priv. Doc. (!)). There is nobody who has a good word to say for Mayer. Neider (Gerold & Co) said that M. sent out statements about the dismissal of jews from the Nat. ök. Gesellschaft a few days after the Anschluß, even before any laws were made, orders given etc. - !
Schams seemed greatly interested & asked a lot of questions. He would like to study the th. of games. We shall meet again.
Dr Neider was full of information about scient. life, or rather its absence. He had heard my name over the Am. Radio during the war in connection with a League of N. report. Great difficulties in getting books, none from the US directly; nobody knows why it can´t be done. He pleads for return of scholars. There should be guest professors. Without these there could be no rejuvenation. The Sect. Chef Skribensky does nothing, but he lies: all (!) dismissed have been invited back. That is not true. (I may follow this up). The Foundation could perhaps do this, rather than start with fellowships. A prof. reaches more people. He might have to provide for textbooks too. But this should not be too difficult. What a life for these poor people. Now an invitation of the Schlick Kreis gathers around Kraft; the things they discuss are only american, or ex-austrian. He wants to have the theory of g, also discussed there.
In the afternoon with Hann. at Dr. von Reich; his wife Jenny. Also several sisters, children etc, but very nice people who have helped a great deal. He is a lawyer; very bright. They have a Schloss in N.Ö. He showed me the backside of life here: corruption, black market, prices etc. One Kilo coal: 1.20! And there are people who think the $ is overvalued with 1:10!!
