Sunday, July 12. Yesterday Maximil. Wallach came; a former Anigus student from Princeton (1943), originally from Vienna. His parents too were killed here by the Nazis! He is in the denazification branch of G2. Told incredible stories. Nobody wants to have been a Nazi; how documents still disappear, people fake etc. While he was here, Gerh. Haberler appeared, polite visit, i.e. I should do something for him. We 3 left in a jeep & when it was gone Wallach told me all about his case: Austr. Legion, illegal; etc, etc. Gottfried´s letter to Marget made a bad impression & the case will drag on until Renner may grant him a pardon. We lunched at the Bristol then to the PX & he drove me with heavy parcels home.
Tea: Buchanan, Moseley, John, Nemschak, Brandtner, Lorenz, Dreiman; Norman had a good chance to explore the institute people. He wonders what can be done. I think one needs visiting professors, special courses for state officials etc. I want to talk this over to-morrow. One could organize something for next year & I would participate.
Dreiman & others in his office suggest a mixed Americ.- Aust. Seminar now. The first will meet Thursday & I should open it. Perhaps I´ll talk on intern. cycles. The institute should get back to scientific work.
In the evening dinner at Ladenburgs again. Unfortunately E. Kallina has already gone to the country. Mrs. Schneeberger picked me up; her husband is a famous Kamera man & they have a film comp. Margets too came & we went over to their new, fine apartment. M. told interestingly about London, Mosc. & Gen. Clark. He is firmly convinced that the Russians want an Austrian treaty & will pull out (but want to hold eastern Germany indefinitely). Believes they have few troups here; that Clark is & was an impossible negotiator, insulted people (Guse) & messed things up in general. The treaty-Commission is making some headway. He should write up the history of these years. I mentioned my plan about an internat. university here & similar things. the US has app. 150 Mill. Sch. here that are entirely free & of which a large amount could be used for cultural matters to inject new energy.
John disappoints me by his listlessness, indecision. He should pull himself together to produce something (38). At least get away from the reports to ministers which, he says himself, are seldom read & still less understood. They must work on more permanent tasks & some instruction there must go on permanently.
