Friday; 17th. July.
Yesterday the meeting; app. 25 persons. I spoke about 1 hour about the intern. spread of cycles. They seemed greatly interested; Mayer found it exceedingly difficult etc. Why? Some were worried because of my skepticism about theory, my negation of a system etc.- Marget, Dulles, Ladenburg & some English were also present. It lasted over 2 hours. There is no point to go into details now. I saw, however, that there may be some real value to the investigation because so little has been done in the field. Most interesting: the relations between long and short term interest rates.
Marget, Ladenburg & I then picked up a Miss Steinschneider & had dinner at the Türk & then drove out to the Kahlenberg. I enjoyed seeing Vienna in the last light & then in the lights when they came on. We sat in the Rest. & had some (sour) wine (S. 39.-!). (I think Austrian wine is not good. It promptly makes my stomach sour as it did years & years ago. French wine hardly does this). We had long talks about Vienna etc; I was most critical of the 4. I think that not enough is being done, that they don´t work hard enough & often on totally unimportant things ( too many people work in Parks; that can wait!). The city makes me sad. Standing there, I enjoyed what I saw, but It gave me no pang. For that my interests & sympathies lie elsewhere & I cannot forget what has happened here e.g. to the jews; how people plundered their neighbours etc.
Today, I saw more of this treachery: Wallach showed me the files of Gerh. Haberler, Kamitz & Mitic. The first a convinced Nazi (illegal, Aust. Legion etz). but no bones about it even then. A very poor letter from Gottfried. But: Kamitz was illegal nazi & Mitic tried 3 x to join, but was turned down because he was a Yugoslav. Both have, before 1938, currently reposted, to all sorts of Nazi offices statistical & economic information!! Not surprising, that Kamitz, soon after the Anschluss could say to my sister that I had quite a few black points with the Gestapo. It is clear where they came from. I am glad I had them. But what these fellows did was ordinary, plain treason & I don´t want ever to have anything to do with them if I can possibly help it. How could they be good scholars? K. is now 40 already. (John is 38; little accomplished so far). Later more. I am glad that mother looks much better, has good appetite & is in good humor. She now enjoys the idea of my possible return next year. That will make parting so much simpler.
