Yesterday obtained Swiss visa. Saw Benesch who is now director of the Albertina. He has now decided finally to stay; full of ressentiment against US. It is pitiful. He wont need long to be cross with everybody here too. No mail from US whatsoever. They may not have forwarded it from Princeton- But why?
Afternoon: Tea here for Dr. Heer (Sociologist- Historian, Edelquatsch), his parents, Dr. Kuffler; Frl. Parzer, Dr. Koseth, Frl. Schreiber (Poet). I had to give the usual little talk about America. Kuffler & Koseth both are sure that nobody understood my talk on the games & they are quite depressed about the gen. level of activity here. I must talk to John.
Friday we visited Hafners in a nice little apartment, gemeindehaus. Bombdamage repaired. The daughter is a Volksschullehrer & makes a good impression; the son (Dr. jur.) is in the Magistrat. Then Lunch at Mayer-Gunthof (Mozartg. 5) also with Hryntschatz & Dr. Wenzl, formerly of the Reichspost & much aged. The apartment is lovely, beautiful old things, fine carpets, paintings, Murano glass etc. These men crave to hear as all others- that Austria has a future, that it is not hopeless, that they should work etc. A curious ideological mixture: M-G: ex-heimwehr, H. ex-catholic party & Wenzl has a lot of sympathy for the suffering Germans. They want me to come back etc. Espec. as visiting professor &they want to take steps with the Ministry. I don´t know whether I want to or not. Next summer: yes; a full term: most doubtful. And who knows what is possible then-. Disc. about currency reform. I am rather inclined to oppose Rizzi. Kranland is said to be almost mad & suffers from megalomania. I should see him but have little intention.
Last night dinner with Gödels Hannch. too. It was very nice. Kurt has already my letter; I must write to him again. It seems that he enjoyed our few outings very much. I´ll take care of him when I get home. Rud. is very nice, has simply wonderful books but does not seem to be a scholar; first of all in his own field. It is hard to tell him whether he should emigrate. (He is 45).
If he were a scientist, there would be less trouble than for a M.D.
To-day quietly with the fam. Much rain, much cooler. Went with Hannch. To Café Wambacher where we met some people she used to go riding with. Then I tried to go, with mother, to see a movie but all sold out. So we went to the park of Schönbrunn instead briefly and got back just in time before a deluge.
I should write some letters (Johnny, Winnie, Gödel).
