Berlin, Sunday Aug 3, 47.

Monday I gave a talk in Sauermanns Seminar on internat. cycles. The students asked fairly intelligent questions, but were not too well trained. At least they participated & that could not be said in Vienna. We had lunch with Röpke & Dr. Cohissen (Radio F). R. was prima donna & had nothing important to say. He gave a “convers.” with S. for the Radio, but mostly they both lectured. Then the R. wanted me too. We talked that over in the evening at S’s home where also McCabe (Fin; Berlin) & a lawyer appeared. So Tuesday we had the talk in the morning, with merlely an outine & it was lovely & I think acceptable. I heard my voice the next day from the tape (it will be sent in Sept.) & it is far deeper than I expected. A funny wienerisch with American tones superimposed! At 11 was the lecture on the games before app. 200 Students. It went all right, was totally new to everyone & they listened intently. Prof Losey (math Stat.) was also there. He is old; & knew of Johnny’s paper of 1928).

Wednesday I went again out to Vossler & we had further long talks. The same princes were at dinner, also those of Braunschweig, his wife & Griechenland Prince Heinrich is a really gifted partner. I took several photos, gave Vossler a shirt, cheese, coffee, etc etc. It was terribly hot again. He is to write about 1848 but in order to get paper for the MS he has to apply at the Bürgermeisteramt at F. The Univ. is in terrible shape. Spoke with the rector Hellstein, who had been am. war prisoner & was trained at Gettysburg (by Mommsen!). Thursday Vossler came again in the morning to the Hotel & I left for Berlin at IIe by plane.

I was driven through most of F.; it is terrible, especially the Altstadt. The scenes around the railroad station can never be forgotten. That poverty, depravation, irritation, the smells, the “Hotels” in the basement of the toilets (!). So many people where one saw that all they had was what they carried with them; the darkness of the bombed buildings with a faint light, sometimes, in the cellars; the begging children and so on & on. A people even more down & beaten than the Austrians; far more.

Met young A.L. Richter several times. Eager, nice, nervous. Has been through much; they have lost an 8 million Mk factory. He is, because of despair, a canditdate for radicalization – as there must be millions. I got him in touch with a textile man in the Mil. Governm. & perhaps that may help him.

Wedn. Had luncheon with Mr. Becker, Chief Higher Educ. for Hesse. Is a sociologist with all the characteristics of complicated talk about simple things, but nice, well meaning. He is willing to receive books for distribution to Univ. Libraries.

The stay in F. was interesting, exiting & disturbing. I really wanted to go to Heidelberg & further south (Rome) but was urged to go to Berlin & I am glad I did it. That was arranged by Mr Jack Bennett, Fin. Adviser to Gen. Clay & I flew here on short notice.
