Marie Jahoda über ihre Gymnasialzeit

Mädchen-Realgymnasium des Vereines für realgymnasialen Mädchenunterricht, Wien 8., Albertgasse 18–22

Wien, 1918/19 bis 1925/26

For 8 years, I went to the Realgymnasium in the Albertgasse. It was a private school, fees were not exorbitant and students with a reasonable academic record could obtain reductions. By and large, I loved it. The school day began at 8 am and ended on some days at 1 pm, on some at 2 or 3 pm. There were about two hours’ homework to be done daily. Subjects: Latin, English, German, History, Maths, Physics, Biology, Geography and in the last year, Introduction to Philosophy. And, of course, physical education including a skiing winter week in the country. Some of the teachers were excellent. […] There were many intellectual excitements – early on, I was overawed by the cleverness of the idea of longitude and latitude, a first inkling of the power of ideas and invention in dealing – with the real world; I loved parsing and the listing of words with a common semantic root – an unending pastime in German. This led to my final year dissertation on negating prefixes for 8 which I read Fritz Mautner’s Sprachlehre.1 The dissertation was required for the Matura which also included 5 (?) two-hour written exams in the major subjects.
