Marie Jahoda über ihre Jugendgedichte

Wien, 1922 bis 1925

And personal turmoil there was galore, judging by the poetry I wrote during my gymnasium years. I wish somebody would have told me that poems need, in addition to inspiration, work to improve them. But nobody did and I thought changes in cold blood were a betrayal of the intensity of feeling that had led to their original production – they might have been quite good. Now I remember only a few and then mostly fragments. In my first year in the Albertgasse, I fell passionately in love with Madeleine who was in her 8th year; she was beautiful and treated me without condescension but also without passion. Unrequited love.
