Marie Jahoda über die Sommerkolonie der Wiener »Vereinigung sozialistischer Mittelschüler«

Ebensee (Oberösterreich), Sommer 1926

In the Summer of 1925,1 I was in charge of a 6–week Summer camp for 200 girls aged 10–15. There were about 10 helpers of my age. For several reasons it was a memorable event. The municipality of Vienna supported us financially for the children whose parents could not pay (the majority). But money was in exceedingly short supply. We hired a school house in Ebensee2 and straw sacks for the dormitories. Everybody brought sheets and blankets from home. There was one paid helper – a woman in charge of the kitchen; a rota of children helped her every day. But there were only 160 sets of cutlery for an of us. Somehow we managed. Every morning we had an assembly with music or poetry recital (I knew many poems by heart and never mentioned an author, whether it was Goethe, Rilke3 or myself). Plans for the day were announced, which included not just hikes and swimming, but seminars, play rehearsals, choir and rain dances. By 9 pm it was lights out for the children and we grown-ups sat together for another hour or two, discussing and planning. I worked like a slave and felt like a queen.
