We had wanted it even sooner, but my father strongly disapproved of Paul. While I flattered myself that he was jealous – perhaps he was – I think now that he knew that Paul [Lazarsfeld] was as little suited to monogamy as Edi [Jahoda]. I yielded because I was happy in my very full life and my unmarried relationship to Paul. But I tried to persuade my father that he was wrong in his judgement. Paul had for the sake of our relationship broken off an engagement to an interesting, beautiful and intelligent girl [i.e. Ella Reiner, married Lingens] whom I knew well.
