Marie Jahoda über ihre Freundin und Schwägerin Susanne »Susi« Jahoda, geborene Steiner

Susi [Jahoda, née Steiner] and Bertha [Reif]: my closest school friends. We sat together at the back of the class for easier gossip when lessons got boring, helping each other shamelessly during exams; not for the Matura though, which was strictly supervised. Susi was always in all subjects top of the class. Her good mind was receptive rather than creative, correct rather than original. You could always rely on her having done all homework and letting you quickly copy it five minutes before the bell rang. Her parents were old-fashioned authoritarians, the father dominating a weak and trembling mother and very strict with his two daughters. [...]

Edi [Jahoda ...] had fallen in love first with Susi and then with Bertha. He was not made for monogamy. Each had something that attracted him profoundly, different as they were. Then Susi became pregnant. He did the ›honourable‹ thing and married Susi.

Am I slurring Susi's character? Yet there is something admirable and virtually unique in her relentless, life-long passion for my brother. Her marriage never developed into the intimate friendship that is the blessing of good and lasting marriages; it always remained burning hot. From the age of 17 onwards, no other man had any meaning in her life. Edi never made a secret of his several great loves. Susi knew; a separation would have killed her and he loved his son. Now in her old age, when her memory begins to fail the agonies are forgotten and she speaks nostalgically of her wonderful marriage. Since Edi's death, she has transferred her capacity for passionate involvement to her son Franz [Jahoda].
