Soziologe und Anthropologe

Everett Cherrington Hughes, Sohn eines methodistischen Reverend, studierte Soziologie und Anthropologie an der Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware (Ohio) und an der University of Chicago in Chicago (Illinois), wo er 1928 zum Doktor der Philosophie (Ph. D.) promoviert wurde. 1927 bis 1938 lehrte er Soziologie an der McGill University in Montreal / Montréal (Quebec), 1938 bis 1961 an der University of Chicago in Chicago, wo er auch 1952 bis 1956 Vorsitzender des Department of Sociology sowie Mitglied des Committee on Education, Training, and Research in Race Relations und des Committee on Human Relations in Industry war. 1961 bis 1968 war er Professor of Sociology an der Brandeis University in Waltham (Massachusetts) und 1968 bis 1976 am Boston College in Boston (Massachusetts). Hughes wurde unter anderem 1950 zum Präsidenten der »Society for Applied Anthropology« und 1963 zum Präsidenten der »American Sociological Association« gewählt. Hughes war mit der aus Kanada stammenden Soziologin Helen Gregory MacGill (1903–1992) verheiratet.

Everett C. Hughes gilt heute als einer der bedeutendsten US-amerikanischen Soziologen des 20. Jahrhunderts und als wichtiger Vertreter der so genannten Zweiten Chicagoer Schule.
