Soziologin

Pauline Vislick kam vor Kriegsbeginn 1914 aus Russland in die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Sie studierte seit 1915 Soziologie an der University of Chicago in Chicago (Illinois), wo sie 1919 zur Bakkalaurea der Philosophie (Ph. B.) wurde. 1917 bis 1918 arbeitete sie als Sozialarbeiterin (Family Case Worker) in der Home Service Division, Chicago Chapter, des Amerikanischen Roten Kreuzes. 1918 bis 1935 betrieb sie ein Forschungsprojekt über die jüdischen Gemeinden in Los Angeles (California) und Chicago. Daneben arbeitete sie 1919 als Rechercheurin für das Federal Department of Labor (Erhebung von Lebenserhaltungskosten) und für die Illinois State Health Insurance Commision sowie als ehrenamtliche Mitarbeiterin der United Charities in Chicago unter der dortigen polnischen Bevölkerung. Daneben setzte sie ihr Studium der Soziologie an der University of Southern California in Los Angeles fort, wo sie 1925 zur Magistra der Philosophie (M. A.) sponsiert und 1930 zur Doktorin der Philosophie (Ph. D.) promoviert wurde. Seit 1925 arbeitete Young als staatliche Sozialökonomin (California State Social Economist). Sie heiratete den Soziologen Erle Fiske Young (1888–1953), Professor ab der University of Southern California.
