Settlement Communities

In the factory’s own workers’ settlements arose communities which have been an important element in the social life of Marienthal. The differences in the materials used, in the size and equipment of the buildings caused different perceptions of their occupants. For example, the inhabitants of the Marienthal workers’ settlement, now revitalized, were regarded as socially superior to the inhabitants of the workers’ Hinterbrühl boarding-house. The inhabitants of residences near the factory area had a higher social reputation; thus, the house of the general director, Herrenhaus (Manor-House), was located directly between the factory plants.
