The Revitalization of the Marienthal Workers’ Settlement

At the end of the 1980s a rethinking took place in Gramatneusiedl. Instead of pulling down the few still-existing relicts of old Marienthal, the community of Gramatneusiedl began a revitalization of the Marienthal workers’ settlement (Hauptstraße) in 1887, which was successfully brought to an end in 2002. The revitalization, lead by the architect Josef Hums (born 1941), Gramatneusiedl, was a sort of social project itself: during the entire process of rebuilding and renovation the – mainly elderly – inhabitants could stay in their apartments.
